And a silver for this image of the Forth Bridge in the Landscape section.

Bo'ness Hill Climb Revival 2011

The Fourth Bo'ness Hill Climb Revival was held over the weekend of 10/11 September 2011 and I was lucky enough to get a Press Pass for the first time this year. Racing first took place here in 1932 until 1966 when it was finally abandoned before being revived in it's present format in 2008.

Headline Auto Awards 2011

The Scotsman Motoring Supplement was recently awarded Third Prize in the 2011 Headline Auto Awards. For those of you who follow my blog or Flickr stream or you'll know I've had a quite a few photographs published recently and one of my cover shots was used in the judging, so I'm well pleased to have made a contribution to the submission. Tom Hunter also picked up an award for the 'Rising star of the Year' for his reviews of the cars, so huge congratulations to all involved.

Mitsubishi Outlander

Photography for a feature in the Scotsman Motoring Supplement. We took the Outlander to a Landrover event near Bathgate so see how it faired on rough terrain against some 'proper' 4x4s. However, due to the lack of a low ratio gearbox and the road tyres the clutch soon started to smell a bit, so while it cooled off I took the chance to set up a few shots.

Sometimes as photographers we get so involved doing things for people we either don't get the time, or forget, to do things for ourselves. Recently I finally got around to producing some prints for the walls of my own house and to have some real examples of the type of print products available to buy from my landscape website www.northernxposure.co.uk

The MDF Block Wrap:
The MDF block wrap is the perfect way to display larger images to give the effect that they are floating just off the surface of the wall. The photographic prints are laminated with a satin finish and then wrapped around the edge of a 12mm or 18mm MDF block. The block is then fixed to the wall using unobtrusive MDF batons which keep the print proud from the wall displaying your image in the best possible fashion. The Fine Art Canvas Wrap:
The image is mounted on board and wrapped around a 35mm or 50mm wooden framework which eliminates the bowing and damage due to mishandling - unlike traditional stretched canvas images. The fine art wraps are beautifully finished with the corners folded, ensuring that the wooden framework cannot be seen from the sides. The wrap can be designed with either a full image wraparound or with a coloured border as shown (choice depends on whether I image is suitable for full wraparound or not). Image shows the Forth Rail Bridge at sunrise.

Newhaven Harbour

Newhaven is a harbour village on the Firth of Forth, within the City of Edinburgh, Scotland, between Leith and Granton. Between 1572 and 1890, Newhaven was a major oyster port. A lighthouse was built in 1869. The structure has since fallen into disuse. Newhaven's harbour is now dwarfed by the enlarged Leith Harbour. The once thriving Fishmarket is now converted into a smaller fishmarket (still in use)a Loch Fyne restaurant, and theNewhaven Heritage Museum. I pass Newhaven Harbour on the way to and from work, but at this time of year I'm lucky enough to be passing just as the sun sets. Unfortunately though the sun does set a little too far South to get the strongest colour in the frame from this angle, but when the water is calm there is still some nice colour and reflected light to be captured.

Final Round – Winning Entry

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
This was a really tricky brief - not only having to represent ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly photographically, but to produce three images of equal high quality. I also felt that the subject matter should be closely related and not only stand as individual images but work as a set when viewed together. The first object I came up with was the ‘Superbad’ pants and from there it was a case of finding different styles to represent the other two categories, all via the ever useful ebay. The images were shot using a Lastolite Hi-Lite background to give a clean modern studiolook and also because my wife didn’t want them hanging on the washing line outside incase the neighbours thought they belonged to her.

Stage 2 – Long Exposure

The Falkirk Wheel
The Falkirk Wheel is the world’s first and only rotating boat liftconnecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal near Falkirk, Scotland. I originally set out to take this as a sunset shot but, as I was happily snapping away, I saw the security guard approaching and feared that my evening was about to be brought to an abrupt end having been ‘moved along’in the past at other locations. However, quite the opposite happened and he suggested that if I waited about another hour the floodlights would be on and he was happy for meto stay. The resulting shot was taken from the top of thewheel to achieve a more abstract feel as opposed to the usual ‘postcard shot’ showing the whole wheel from the basin 35 metres below.
